EG: Lesha, hello! Let's start from the very beginning, this is an excursion for those who know you from “Rose Wine” and “Ripped Jeans” at parties. When and why did you take the pseudonym Eljay?

Eljay: Firework! When I was still small, my boys and I “bombed” the walls, that is, painted graffiti, and everyone had their own “tag” - this is the name that is written on the wall, their own nickname. Eljay was my nickname then and remains to this day.

EG: At what point did Sayonara Boy appear and what does it mean? So you have two pseudonyms?

Eljay: The choice of a new name was deliberate, and it is no longer just a pseudonym. I was 21 years old, and there was one very important turning point in my life, after which it was divided into before and after.

Sayonara translates to “goodbye” in Japanese. Then I said goodbye to people and things that prevented me from developing and kept me from pushing off from the bottom.

EG: Speaking of battles. Now this topic is wildly popular. Did you have a desire to do this again, well, at least once, to remember where it all began, so to speak?

Eljay: There was a lot of hype around battle rap and it became mainstream for a long time. But it's not mine. I don’t see any creative interest in this; I won’t do it for the sake of hype. So it's unlikely.

EG: In general, do you watch Versus and its variations? Do you have a favorite battler? How do you feel about the guys who are doing this: Oxy, Slava CPSU and others?

Eljay: I've probably already answered this question. I have other interests.

EG: The peak for you happened with the release of “Rose Wine” - the song is cool, no doubt. But what happened to Feduk? He recently visited Yura Dudya and told his version. We are sure you have your own view on this situation.

Eljay: Nothing special happened, the boys were just in a hurry, they released the video unfinished, and I didn’t like it. I don’t treat my material that way. I think that if you do it, then squeeze out the maximum quality.

I was focused on doing it well, and the guys were focused on the speed of releasing the video. We did not agree on this.

EG: Most of your tracks have such peppy beats and crazy lyrics. The latest release is the song “Minimal”. Cool, by the way, but suddenly sad. Is there something wrong?

Eljay: Just another episode from my life. You just need to listen to the song, everything is very clear there.

EG: By the way, how do you write your songs? What inspires you? How do words appear? Do you also write your own music?

Eljay: Always in different ways and in different places: on the plane, in the hotel - it doesn’t matter. Anything can inspire. I don’t write music myself, I can sketch out a beat, but in general writing music is not my thing.

EG: Name five performers who, in your opinion, are really cool.

Eljay: 6lack, Black Cinema, a.chal, Travis Scott, the Blaze, ZHU. This is the first thing that came to mind.

EG: Which of them, or not, would you really like to work with?

Eljay: There are plans, but I won’t reveal them yet. In general, I’m already working with the group “Black Cinema”. They are cool.

EG: You are wildly popular now. What are you striving for when so much has already been achieved? Describe the moment when you say: that’s it, life is good.

Eljay: On the one hand, my life was successful when I found myself in music, on the other hand, I don’t plan to stop for such thoughts in the near future. I definitely have room for improvement, and not just in music.

Since its emergence back in the former USSR in the early nineties, Russian hip-hop has quickly begun to gain popularity among young people and has no intention of losing ground.

While still a teenage schoolboy, he first came to the Novosibirsk battle site and tried his hand there. "It is mine!" – he thought and first began visiting live venues, then tried to perform in battles on the Internet. He was only thirteen years old then.

He is truly “sick” with hip-hop, writes his own lyrics and takes part in verbal battles. Internet battles have “accelerated” his popularity: fans are starting to post clips of his compositions, and he is gaining a large number of likes on social networks. His popularity is growing, but Eljay again, as he once did with his studies at college, abruptly says to himself “stop.” He later explained this action: he realized that he needed to stop with battles and start composing his own tracks.

The beginning of success

Lekha-Eldzhey set up a home studio in 2009 and wrote the first tracks there, posting them online. His style of that time is called by fans as “angry and daring lyrics of entrances.” Another characteristic (in his own words) of the performance style is “subtle, but dirty and dense,” and these words will later appear in the lyrics of his hit.

For five years, Alexey, as they say, “without raising his head,” has been working and polishing his rap skills; there are already a lot of clips from his tracks on YouTube. Finally, to the delight of fans, in 2014 a large official album called “Bosses are Smoking” was released. "BOSHKI DIMATSYA LYRICS" was a serious success among the underground youth audience, although it was criticized for its extraordinary style.

Two years later, a new collection appeared with the name “Catacombs,” which brought Eljay even more popularity; many cover versions of songs from this album appeared.

In 2017, together with Pavel Kravtsov (stage name - Kravts), he shot the video “Eljay & Kravts, Disconnect”, and almost immediately the collection “Sayonara Boy” was born. The presentation of the album took place on July 7 in Moscow, at the Lookin Rooms club. Here's what enthusiastic fans wrote about the songs from this album: “Down with vanilla suffering about our childhood! We have grown up and it’s too late to save us!” Another statement from one of the fans about the collection: “These are arrogant, but cool songs, in which everything that is not allowed is mixed, and even if you really want to, it is also not allowed, as our parents think.”

It was then that Allj changed his performance style and appearance: he was influenced by the work of South African rave groups, specifically the Cape Town band “Die Antwoord”. And Eljay cannot be stopped: he quickly records six more studio albums, the latest of which is “Sayonara Boy 3”.

"Pink wine"

This track, as soon as it hit the internet in 2017, immediately took top positions on social networks: it was listened to 200 million times on VK by the end of the year! The song was recorded in collaboration with Russian hip-hop singer Feduk (real name Fedor Insarov). In November of the same year, a video of the same name was shot, and in two days it gained two million views.

Wild, simply indescribable success, and suddenly... The clip suddenly disappeared from access on YouTube! Fans are shocked, social media. networks explode with bewilderment: why, what happened? The first statement regarding the blocking was posted on the Internet by the director of the video, Alexey Rozhkov: “Soon the video will be unblocked, these are the tricks of our enemies.” The incomprehensible situation was later “resolved” by Eldzhey himself: it turns out that it was he who applied for blocking, allegedly his copyrights were violated. The reason is funny - he wanted his name to appear before Feduk. The original version looked like this – “Elzhdey & Feduk”, but since the clip was released for the first time on Feduk’s channel, he arbitrarily rearranged the names. By the way, on social media networks, fans of Allj also did not support this name and sharply spoke out against it.

A serious conflict erupted around the video. The then-famous blogger Dzharakhov on Twitter sharply criticized Eldzhey’s stage image and performance style, but this was, as Alexey countered, only his point of view and a matter of personal taste. The leader of the “Little Big” group, Ilya Prusikin, stated that “this guy was generally invited only as a performer, and the song was not his.” The information, by the way, was soon refuted by both Eldzhey and Feduk. The result of the conflict is that the true author of the song decided to “extinguish” the scandal and leave everything as it is: “I assessed the situation soberly and decided that there is no point in ruining Feduk’s career, the video will soon return to YouTube.”

Why is he not like everyone else?

According to the guy, “study and work are boring, this is for those who have not been able to prove themselves in anything else.” Yes, the point of view is controversial, but this is his own sincere opinion. If an artist is talented and creativity brings him success and satisfaction, why not?

Eljay is very self-critical, he works carefully on his tracks. Listening to the “draft” versions over and over again, he removes what he doesn’t like and adds new “highlights”. The quality of the songs has improved tremendously since the album "Sayonara Boy", and the strong, hoarse voice has become undeniably recognizable.

The “trick” of his stage image is milky-white lenses, which look creepy, but create an extraordinary look.
