How to say “thank you”? Touch your fist first to your forehead and then to your chin. Almost anything can be said in sign language, which is used by deaf people. And it is better to show names and other names in a dactyl alphabet, in which each letter has its own gesture. At the festival "World of the Deaf" in Sokolniki Park many people spoke with gestures. They are used to communicating this way because they are born unable to hear. At the edge of the festival stage, a sign language interpreter used gestures to translate the greetings of the honored guests and the words of the songs to which the deaf dancers performed. A particularly beautiful genre is the gestural song, when the artist “sang” with smooth gestures to a soundtrack. This is how it took place in Sokolniki Park International Day of the Deaf, which is traditionally celebrated on September 29.

“When a deaf person comes to a cafe, he cannot say “give me some tea” because he will not hear the answer. He has to point his finger at the menu or write on a piece of paper. But how to call an ambulance by phone? We want to draw attention to the problems of those who are not heard, and show that these are cheerful, beautiful, talented people. Only they speak a little differently, often using sign language. By the way, it is not difficult, you can learn it, like any foreign language, in order to speak with those who live nearby.” Ekaterina Verbitskaya, president of the charitable foundation "Peace and love", and her friends started the Deaf World festival ten years ago. This is the only large-scale festival in Russia in support of people with hearing impairments. Famous artists come here who also want to take part in a good and useful cause. And of course, deaf artists of various genres perform here.

When a person cannot express emotions in words, he uses gestures and movements with special “fervor.” There are many talented dancers and mimes among deaf people. Many people start studying while still in school for deaf and hard of hearing children. “My players don’t hear sounds, but they definitely fall into the rhythm that I show them with my fingers. Today we will perform the “Matryoshka” dance, here are girls from primary school, they have been studying recently, but are making obvious progress, because they are very artistic and, most importantly, they want to dance,” explains the teacher Irina Gurova from a boarding school at the Kurchatov school.

After graduating from school, you can enter the Russian State Specialized Academy of Arts, where people with hearing impairments are trained to become actors in drama theater and cinema. Academy graduates work in the Theater of Facial Expressions and Gestures, in dance groups, and teach in clubs. A few years ago, former students created their own theater called "Innuendo" His repertoire already includes a dozen plastic performances (fragments of which were shown at the festival). “Since childhood, I dreamed of becoming an artist and was happy when I found out that I could study this profession. Teachers from the academy came to our school for hearing-impaired children, they arranged an audition and invited me to enroll. Now I am busy in almost all productions of “Underword”, my favorite role is in the play “Duck Hunt”. At first, my parents were against me becoming an artist, but now they no longer think so,” he says with gestures Antonina Pichugina(a sign language interpreter helps us talk). “And my parents were happy when I said that I wanted to enter the theater department of a specialized academy,” she smiles. Irina Hristova. – I like different roles, both tragic and comic. But for some reason I dream of playing the role of a funny old woman, I see myself in this image.”

“Deaf actors can be in demand in various theatrical projects and be popular with audiences,” I am sure Sergey Bidny, director of the Nedoslov Theater, - Now two of our guys are working in the musical “Oscar and the Pink Lady” in St. Petersburg, three are at the Provincial Theater, in the production of “Caligula”. The veil of isolation is disappearing, both society and the actors themselves are changing, we are moving towards rapprochement.”

Different artists complement each other perfectly when they are united by an interesting creative idea. Young people, including those with hearing impairment, “rock” the drums in the “Ethno-rhythm DEAF” studio of the “Integration” cultural center. “We come up with interesting creative experiments, we play not only ethnic drums, but also other percussion instruments, bells, for example. The deaf do not hear and therefore copy the movements of others, but it turns out harmoniously, because all people have an internal natural sense of rhythm,” says the head of the studio Nikolay Ivanov. At the festival, everyone, young and old, beat the rhythm together with the drummers. Those who did not hear repeated the clapping while looking at those around them. Barriers to communication have almost disappeared. We live nearby and can understand each other quite well, even if one of us usually speaks sign language.
