Julia, Gogol’s library is located on Okhta, far from the center, surrounded by vacant lots and high-rise buildings from the mid-twentieth century. From whatever direction you approach, nothing foretells such a riot of modernity, bright colors... How did this become possible?

The library itself is almost a hundred years old, and we are the central regional library of the Krasnogvardeisky district. In all respects it is a completely classic institution. The initiator of the changes was Marina Borisovna Shvets, who heads the district library system. The Gogol Library was the first site where a complete reconstruction took place. Following us, the children's library “City” has already passed this path. It is planned that changes will gradually affect all thirteen Okhta libraries.

- Did you focus on any samples?

We focused on Finland - fortunately, it is very close. There is a wonderful library culture there, with many inspiring initiatives. Both the library staff and our architectural designers (KIDZ bureau) specifically studied the Finnish experience.

- What is the main idea of change?

The main task is to attract young people to the library without losing more mature readers. Become a place where people want to come to spend their free time experiencing culture.

The library has been operating in the new format for two years now - are the changes noticeable? Now, for example, it’s the beginning of twelve - and there are very few visitors in the library...

Our library is for adults, and during the day most of our potential visitors work. That is why, after opening after renovation, we changed our opening hours. Now we are open every day until 20.00, the only day off is Monday. We open at 11, and in the first half of the day, when most adults study or work, mostly older people come to us. After 4 p.m. and right up to closing time, high school students, students, and working adults go. Yes, quantitative indicators - attendance, book distribution - increased after the update, but this is not the main thing. The most important thing for me is qualitative changes. Our own sense of the library has also changed. Young employees came with sparkling eyes, drive, and a desire to invent and implement new projects. We really like our place of work.

And what do adults do in the updated district library? Have you developed any new formats of work other than issuing books?

We always try to take into account the needs of the audience, and many events are organized at the initiative of our readers and visitors. For example, this is how the “Children’s Time” project, aimed at popularizing family leisure, arose. Mothers, fathers with children, grandparents with grandchildren come to us, and we conduct reading, drawing, modeling classes, and put on performances even for the youngest spectators.

Do I understand correctly that in these cases the library simply provides premises to enterprising visitors? Neither its collections nor its employees are involved in any way in these activities?

Not really. Indeed, the events I mentioned were born as a “bottom-up initiative”, and the library supported them with its resources. But not only with premises: for such meetings we organize thematic book exhibitions from our funds, and those who come to these meetings often become our regular readers.

As for the library staff, in addition to their current work, they also have their own big projects. So, as a manager, I am only glad if some events are held without the direct participation of employees on the site.

- Tell us about the most interesting project, in your opinion.

It's probably the Crazy Sixties. For six months, from February to June 2016, the library hosts lectures and meetings with philologists, art historians, musicians, and cultural experts. They talk about music, foreign literature, art, fashion, and subcultures of the 1960s. We are preparing book exhibitions and inviting presenters. The project turned out to be incredibly popular; there are often not enough places at lectures for everyone who came. People listen with great interest, ask questions, and suggest further topics. For the last time, we sorted out all the books that were discussed in the lectures. As part of this project, we watch movies, listen to music, and even plan to hold a fashion show of the 60s.

How it works: through the halls of the Gogol Library

The library has its own brand book, which includes a logo and corporate identity, in which all announcements, printed materials and videos that the library creates are designed. Elements of this style are constantly found in the interiors of the building, starting from the hall.

The first thing a visitor sees upon entering is a media wall: screens and reproductions in identical frames are mounted on a black wall. Thematic videos made by library staff are constantly broadcast on a large television panel and four small televisions. For example, on one TV slides on the topic “Literary News” replace each other, on another - “Libraries of the World”, on the third - “Poster of St. Petersburg events”. Videos from the “I am a Reader” series are broadcast on a large TV, in which Alexander Arkhangelsky, Maya Kucherskaya and other famous critics talk about literary events. Book trailers and “I recommend” readers’ videos also appear here.

Before reconstruction, the Gogol Library had two traditional rooms: a subscription and a reading room. Now instead of them there is a hall of fiction and a hall of industrial literature. This has proven to be very convenient for readers who usually know exactly which room they are going to. The art and industry halls mirror each other, which makes it much easier for readers to navigate the library.

The “art” hall presents classics, modern popular and other literature, and there are several computers with access to full-text databases.

One of the “heroes” of this hall is Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol, whose name the library on Okhta received in 1952. Gogol had nothing to do with this place or the library; it was just that the centenary of the writer’s death was being celebrated at that time. After the reconstruction, the library staff decided not to miss this great opportunity and created the “Library with a Name” project, becoming one of the centers of “Gogol studies” in St. Petersburg. Here they develop and conduct excursions to Gogol’s places in the city, collect a collection of his books, and conduct educational events. On the wall is a symbolic portrait of Gogol, composed of his quotes.

Hall of Industry Literature
Literature on various fields of knowledge is collected here, there are places to work with electronic resources, and a dialogue zone. And there is even a stylized telephone booth where visitors can retire to talk on a cell phone.

All furniture in both the art and industry halls is on wheels. This makes it easy to move bookshelves and organize the necessary seating, turning the library into a lecture space or a concert hall. When the Gogol Library participated in the Night of Museums, even fencing tournaments were held here. Mobility and transformation are one of the basic principles of the library’s spatial structure, which allows for the most efficient use of small spaces.

The main design element in this room is the WORD bookshelf, created from large decorative letters. “You need to handle words honestly,” said Gogol. The meaning of this space is precisely the honest handling of words. A business atmosphere has been created here; up to 40 people can attend meetings at the same time. Serious scientific conferences are held (the hall is equipped with a video conferencing system), and master classes for children and adults (for example, related to handicrafts, drawing or mastering computer programs).

Library staff are positioning this space as a coworking space, an area for youth initiatives, and a platform for communications. There is a large collection of media publications (including training programs), webinars and computer master classes are held. The shelves are stylized to resemble the game Tetris, since the key principle of this game - the richness of interpretations - became the basis for the concept of the media library. Even the window decoration is included in the concept: above each window there is an inscription, for example “Real life” or “Nice view”

“Take a book and go home” - they decided to abandon this classic scheme in Gogol’s library. There is no strict sign “Entry with printed materials is prohibited.” You can come to the Gogol Library with your own books and read them in a comfortable environment.

The industry and art halls have comfortable places for private reading, and the art hall is designed for those who want to read together - out loud or silently. Here students prepare for exams. Literary readings and competitions, youth film festivals, and exhibitions are held. On weekends there is a children's hour, when parents and children watch movies or theater productions together, read aloud and play board games. Here you can lie on the floor, which looks like a grassy lawn, or sit on the windowsills. The symbol of the art hall is a tree bookshelf, an image of constant growth and development.

Organization of library space in the central children's library of the municipal cultural institution "Centralized Library System" in the city of Baltiysk, Kaliningrad region. The comfort of the library beckons us: The lamp here burns so welcomingly. The sofa is waiting... Shall we play in the “Corner”? Here is a sheet of paper, a pencil in hand...

Our library is a free and absolutely accessible institution. Considering that when working in a library, a child wants to change the environment after studying in the classroom, we introduce elements of comfort in the design of the library space. We are constantly improving our image, improving conditions, changing the interior. Our motto is “Everything for the reader!” We work from 11 to 19 hours. We have open access to funds, 2 reading rooms for business reading, 2 subscriptions and a Recreation Corner for leisure activities for children of primary school age. The library is always cozy and comfortable. Our collection is formed by timeless classics, educational and reference literature, so it is always in demand. The attractive image of the library in the eyes of readers is created thanks to the spacious premises, where there is free access to all sources of information. You can demonstrate your talents or take part in interesting and unique competitions. During subscriptions, some people just like to “drown” in a comfortable chair with their favorite book. Little readers enjoy spending their free time in the library. The main goal of our exhibitions is to attract attention and interest so that everyone wants to stop near them. With us, every reader finds something to do for his reading soul. Here you can prepare for lessons. You can view the latest newspapers and magazines.

Our readers have the opportunity to use the electronic catalog, work in various programs, download information to any medium, print documents and use copier and scanner services. To attract readers to books, we often arrange express exhibitions with the emergence of a current topic, which attract bookmarks and symbolic icons.

We organize circular exhibitions on legal issues and education of a healthy lifestyle. They are available for viewing, you can sit near them, make the necessary notes, and find out the necessary telephone numbers. In the formation and design of library space on subscriptions, the age characteristics of readers are taken into account. For preschoolers and younger schoolchildren, we purchased comfortable, height-appropriate furniture (using sponsorship funds). The arrangement of books is based on genre. The shelves are decorated with short and understandable headings: “Poems”, “Fairy Tales”, “My First Story”, “Travel”, “Wonders of Technology”, “Wildlife”, “Writers of Russia”, “Writers of the World for Children”, “Learn and be surprised." On the shelves there are sayings and toys in the form of favorite literary characters, which help to adapt to an unfamiliar book space. Exhibitions for children contain not only books, but also objects that attract children's attention. Book exhibitions located on the “book tree” are attractive. And the night owner of this fabulous place, the library gnome Gosha, creates an atmosphere of mystery. We took the legend about Gosha from Vladislav Krapivin’s book “The Return of the Krechet Clipper”. We tell it on every excursion when registering children for the library. And it’s nice to hear when the kids say that today they were not just in the library, but were visiting Gosha.

To preserve the role of books in children's lives, we are trying to increase attention to family reading. For this purpose, we created the “I want to read” Corner. Parents are offered methodological literature in the form of Reminders, Tips, Bookmarks. On Sundays, group and individual classes are held with parents, and on weekdays there are only individual conversations, where experienced librarians try to help parents interested in raising reading children. As a recommendation for organizing reading, a “Fairytale Calendar” is drawn up for each month. Quotes for this corner are chosen to be meaningful. For example, “By giving books to children, we give them wings.”

The arrangement of the fund for children of middle and high school age is systematic, according to branches of knowledge. To reveal the fund, we also try to arrange shelf exhibitions during the subscription. We design “talking” exhibitions. For major literary holidays - panoramic exhibitions.

For high school students, we organize exhibitions in the “Time to Read Books for the Soul” cycle, with themes and books selected for them in accordance with the political and literary calendar. For this purpose, in the center of the hall there is an exhibition rack “Young Russia is Reading”, on which exhibitions and slogans about reading periodically change: “Open a book, open your world”, “There is a book of eternal love”, “Reading is fashionable, visiting the library is prestigious” , “Become cooler with a book!”, “Don’t be sad, read, laugh!”, “There is no better thing in life than going to the library,” “If you didn’t go to the disco, go to the library,” “The library is an intellectual store, feed brain!". We also design in-shelf and “talking” exhibitions.

The library premises are also used as a place for meetings, conferences and seminars, presentations and celebrations. Glass display cases with changing exhibitions add a unique flavor to the foyer's design. Compositions of fresh flowers and balloons give this space a beautiful and festive look.

(organization of intellectual leisure for readers) In the summer, we are in demand by the city for organizing leisure activities for summer camps. Traditionally, we hold meetings in the form of educational hours, competitions, film screenings, and meetings with interesting people. The work of the career guidance camp for work and rest “Friends of the Book” can be called an innovative moment. The camp is created by the USZN for recreation, health improvement and employment of teenagers from low-income families in the summer, where there is an opportunity not only to relax, but also to earn money. He has been working in our library for 7 years. We accept 15 teenagers, provide them with our own premises, organize employment, leisure activities, and conduct educational activities.

To develop the personality of these children, the psychologist of the SATORI youth organization holds round tables. “The world in which I live” - for the formation of skills of tolerant consciousness. The round table “Computer gambling: a hobby or a disease” is held in the form of a frank conversation “The computer was my friend, now it is becoming an enemy” and testing “Are you a computer addict?” The round table “Man and His Vices” is held as a meeting-revelation “At what level is your tobacco addiction?” with warning training “Are you prone to drugs?” The Employment Center psychologist conducts adaptation classes, testing to determine personality type, exercises to determine personality type, and also many classes on the classification of professions 2 times a week. The guys think about their place in life, themselves, and the possibility of self-education. One of the points of the educational and developmental program was meetings between young people and doctors at the youth reproductive health center. The guys from this shift worked on a special local history program “Studying the Past”, dedicated to the 65th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. The key point was the study of documents from the history of the region. On an excursion to the Vistula Spit Museum, we learned in detail about the history of April 1945. These are the legendary days of the assault. And as a result, the library has 4 literary and historical studies: “Shura Serebrovskaya”, “The first inhabitants of the village. Spit", "Western landing", "Baltic Spit: past and present". The children learned a lot about the history of the city and region from the books of Lydia Dovydenko, a local writer and local historian. And they were very lucky that they were able to attend the presentation of her book “The Secrets of Pillau,” which was held in the library especially for the camp. Each teenager received as a gift the book “The Secrets of Pillau” with the autograph of the author.

An excursion to Schaaken Castle helped to learn about the past of the area. This castle is the epitome of the Middle Ages. It was built in the 12th century. Everyone was able to feel a little like knights and beautiful ladies: they could ride a horse, fight with spears and swords, shoot with a bow, try on ancient clothes, and eat “medieval food.” But most importantly, the spirit of antiquity was in the air. True, it was creepy when the guide talked about the terrible tortures that the monks used to fight heretics. The program of the trip to the rapidly developing city of Yantarny was an excursion into the present. We mined amber ourselves, visited the amber museum at the plant, and the museum of superstitions, which is located in the ancient building of Yantarny. The theater of the book is used as an integral part of mass events held for young children, which helps to cultivate their love of reading through play and aesthetic perception of the text. It fosters active creative reading. After all, in early childhood they understand and remember not through reason and memory, but through imagination and fantasy. Participating in the productions of the Theater of the Book, the children happily go to rehearsals, read and learn the texts, and then show their acting skills. The theater of the book works both as a puppet theater, and as a theater on the table, and as an animation theater, and as a shadow theater. Our theater is chamber. There are usually 20–30 children present at the performance. Theatricalization is an element of a mass event. Moreover, in front of each group, the required work of art is “played” by guys from the same group. Of course, they come to our rehearsals 2 weeks before the event. Moreover, it is not the most talented children who play in our theater. And these guys, with average creative potential, try very hard in our “performances” and happily show their ability to turn a small excerpt of a work of art into a bright picture. The remaining participants are active spectators of the event. They participate in competitions, quizzes, dialogue with artists, and young artists enjoy the attention of their classmates. The recreation corner “You Can Do It” was created for primary schoolchildren. Here, in addition to interesting books, they have at their disposal educational board games, checkers and chess, construction sets, puzzles, a real “Field of Miracles,” albums and felt-tip pens for drawing. When a group of children gathers, we conduct loud readings, face readings, and looking at illustrations. We see positive results when conducting reasoning conversations. The guys communicate with pleasure and engage in discussions with pleasure. The recreation corner “You Can Do It” was created for primary schoolchildren. During the school year, work is carried out in this library space on additional literary development with 1st grade students and extended day groups. We work according to the programs “My first Russian history” and “Seasons: a chronicle of folk holidays and rituals in Rus'.” These are loud readings of historical and fiction literature, combined with the development of creative abilities through competitions and game programs. For example, according to the program “My First Russian History” on the basis of the exhibition “How Faith was Chosen in Rus'”, a conversation “The Baptism of Rus'” is held, a loud reading of the story of N.N. Golovin is held. “Holy Prince Vladimir and the Baptism of Rus'”, watching an episode from the film “Russian Rites” and a quiz. According to the “Seasons” program, in January an exhibition-story “Winter Folk festivities” was organized, an educational conversation “Walk at Christmas time without looking back” was held with a loud reading of I. Shmelev’s stories from the book “The Lord’s Summer” and the stories of N.S. Leskova. Then the children took books to read at home on this topic and the next week carried out the game program “Christmas and Yuletide Week.” In May, an exhibition was created - a symbol of “The loudest of all months, the cheerful month of May!” Conversation with video clips “Holy Trinity”. Loud reading of books on the topic “People’s work in spring days.” Literary educational hour with the game program “Let's go, girls, curl some wreaths! Curl the wreaths, let’s curl the green ones!” In December, this is the symbolic exhibition “Frosty snow will sparkle with silver brocade.” Then a conversation with videos “Happy New Year! With all the family! Loud reading of books on a Christmas theme and the game program “Hello, guest winter!” A survey among teachers who use the program, working using innovative technologies, made it possible to improve it annually and continue to develop the cognitive interests of schoolchildren. Huge shelves of books, library cards and obligatory silence are the first things that come to mind when you hear the word “library”. But progress has not bypassed book storage, so today libraries are convenient modern platforms where you can not only read and study.

website invites you to look into libraries, which with all their appearance remind us that it is already the 21st century.

1. Tianjin Binhai Library

As you can see in the photo, the futuristic library in the Chinese city of Tianjin was not nicknamed for nothing "Eye", but it is notable not only for its appearance. The full-height shelving of the 5-story building can store up to 1.2 million books, and the sphere in the center serves as an auditorium with a capacity of 110 people.

2. Library in Thionville

3. Philological Library of the Free University of Berlin

It’s not for nothing that it’s nicknamed the Philological Library "the brain of Berlin": The rounded shape of the building follows the shape of the human brain, and the curved staircases and galleries truly resemble convolutions. One of the features of the library is natural lighting and energy saving.

4. Sir Duncan Rice Library

Inside a 7-story cube made of strips of white and transparent glass are stored about 250 thousand ancient manuscripts collected for almost 5 centuries since the founding of the university. The architects took care of the environment: special systems collect rainwater, and photocells on the roof and timers control the lighting.

5. Library and Education Center of the University of Vienna

The unusual geometry on the outside gives way to smooth lines on the inside, and different areas of the building are connected by bridges, galleries and terraces. Through the main entrance, visitors enter central audience- large atrium with natural light.

6. Bishan Public Library

Bishan is a small town in Singapore, but its library would be the envy of a metropolis. The 4-story building itself is treehouse metaphor, and the cells protruding from the walls are places for private reading or work.

7. Tama University of the Arts Library

This library was designed to reflect the spirit of the arts university and inspire creativity among students. One of the library areas is an open space where visitors can simply sit or even sleep.

8. Birmingham Library

Birmingham Library is the largest public library in the UK and one of the country's most visited attractions. One of the two most important collections is stored here Shakespeare's works, as well as many rare and antique books.

Every day we are faced with information “pouring” at us from all sides. Almost everywhere, and in the library too, we see stands, leaflets, leaflets that we... simply don’t notice anymore. Do our readers read our stands? Do they find the information they need there?

We'll figure it out together. It is a well-known fact that it is better to see once than to hear a hundred times. For your attention I I suggest Today a selection of photographs of information stands from different libraries, made both professionally and with the help of design solutions by the librarians themselves. For ease of perception of information, I have roughly divided the photographs into several sections.

But first, a question. Do you think such an innovation as an information stand in form, but in essence an action, has the right to life?

Here, for example, is such a promotion as in our library - read more at the link:Campaign "Point on the map of the small homeland"

Answers are accepted in comments))

I would like to note that fellow methodologists wrote some pretty good recommendations on the topic of information stands. Let’s actually start with them.

..." The main goal in attracting readers to the library is not so much the introduction of various services, but ensuring their relevance, promoting intellectual products and the same services.

Promotion– these are various forms of information, persuasion of users or reminders about the services and products of the library.

Main tasks promoting library services are:

formation of a prestigious image (image) of the library in the minds of the population, representatives of local authorities, public organizations, etc.;

informing about new services introduced by the library;

maintaining the popularity of existing library services, convincing users to demand them;

informing potential users about the time, place and conditions for the provision of services;

focusing the attention of users on the specific properties and benefits of the library services offered, on the freeness of basic forms of service.

The first photographs on the theme "library", "library". The use of these words is the most popular in the names of stands - there is a world, a city, a dossier, and a corner with a courier. In my opinion, any names look decent, the main thing is that the “courier” promptly changes the information, the “world” reflects the “global” scale, and the “dossier” ... by the way, what’s in your “information dossier”, gentlemen - librarians?

We continue to study information stands. Colleagues suggest filling the resource with the following materials:

Basic information: library name; the library network of which it is a subdivision; operating mode; Full name librarian; composition of the fund

Goals and objectives of the library in organizing library services to the population;

Rules for using the library;

Information about the services offered by the library, about the forms of their provision;

Information about amateur associations, clubs of interest (if any): work plan, goals, objectives, etc.;

Certificates of gratitude for the results achieved in the work;

Announcements about current events, monthly work plans, etc.;

Publishing products.

Each of the stands, in my opinion, is worthy of our attention. What do you think?

While you are looking at the photos, I will continue.We all understand thatThe information stand should be located in a place convenient for users to familiarize themselves with. It is advisable to glaze the stand, especially if it is located outside the library. Materials and announcements must be updated in a timely manner so that the stand does not contain outdated information. Of course, use computer typing. What else? How do you like the presence of the word “information” in the names of the stands? This seems to be a good word, but librarians sometimes get carried away and we read, and read, and read “information”. It would be better if there was a Library City.

Just a couple of lines about design of materials. And above in the photo and below you will see design options. This is a personal matter (and financial too) for each library. But sometimes we see this picture - some librarians, without further ado, put more text in the proposed “pockets” and let it hang. And some people really love everything shiny and it turns out that the text is no longer important.

We, librarians, very often forget that our “information” will be read by ordinary people (don’t forget to allocate stands separately for adults and children), who absolutely do not care how beautiful and long the name of our library is. They want to see what is happening in this library - what events, what services, when and in what department this can be done, and where to come with their child. Large-scale canvases filled with texts DO NOT WORK. Alas and ah.

Of course, we follow each other’s successes, focus on foreign countries, and come up with something of our own. The stands placed above are not bad or require improvement. Each of them is good, but THE READER NEEDS ANOTHER ONE.

BRIEF. CAPACITY. NOT STANDARD.

good example of brevity

I suggest reading very good thoughts on the topic of stands from one of our librarian colleagues. The answers to these questions may vary from librarian to librarian. And this is good, because in this case we will be dealing with “a non-general facial expression.” Someone, for sure, can suggest more techniques and methods that make information stands truly work effectively, and not just a set of posters, by which readers pass without stopping.

1. How many stands do you need?There may be several of them: in the foyer, at the subscription office, in the reading room, in other departments and functional rooms. Each of them has their own goals and objectives.

In the foyer - the most general information about the library: full name, postal and email address, founders, managers, partners, Mission, awards. Probably, information about the regulatory documents is appropriate: Charter, Rules, Price lists for paid services..., according to which the library operates. It is hardly worth posting the full text of these documents; it is enough to list them and tell them where they are and who to contact for them. Here is the structure of the library: the names of departments (branches), how they can help readers/users, how to find them, who to contact... Information about general library, district/city events and promotions.

Accordingly, in departments there is more detailed information about the departments: about employees, resources, services, events, achievements...

2. Where and on what are the stands located? Spatially: closer to the collection, to the exit, next to the catalogue, near the department? ... It depends on both the size of the room and the conceptual idea. On special tablets, posters, exhibition stands, bookshelves, directly on the wall, using scrap materials?... I know that there are very original finds.

3. What stands are needed: permanent or variable? Statemental or navigational (explaining where, what and how to find)? There may be both. You can make two parts on one stand. Then what is the ratio of the parts? Frequency of updating the variable component?

4. Sections and topics of the stand? They depend on what we want to tell readers/users, what to show, what to entice... They can also be permanent and replaced with more relevant ones.

6. How will texts, sections and topics be arranged on the stand? You can follow the principle of a book page:
left to right, top to bottom. It is possible - centrifugally. In the center there is a non-stopper, some detail that sharply attracts attention: a question mark and the question itself, a photograph, a black spot... In children's libraries, mascots, literary characters are used for this purpose... and then, to the edges of the stand - texts , revealing the meaning of non-stopper. The text and pictures located in the upper right part are best perceived: the most important or urgent information may be here. What other ideas are there?
