From July 7 to 8, the St. Petersburg Port “Sevkabel” will host the Urban Culture Festival, the largest event in the world of street culture. This year's program is designed specifically for those who are used to active recreation, being on trend and not afraid of experiments. Music scene will be presented by the most promising freshmen, most of whom have already gone from internet sensation to artist attracting thousands of people. In general, the festival is a territory for young lovers of fashion, music and art who want to be aware of what street culture is about and are open to new things.

Port "Sevkabel"

Special attention should be paid to the location of the festival. In the previous two years, it was hosted by such venues as the St. Petersburg Museum street art and the Moscow club Stadium Live. This time, visitors will find a huge industrial space on the Neva coast in the harbor of Vasilyevsky Island. Previously, this place housed a factory for the production of cables, lamps and switches, now there is everything that a modern city dweller needs to spend time with pleasure and benefit: restaurants, exhibition halls and sports grounds. However, the Sevkabel company did not stop its work - it simply reduced the area for manufacturing products by 20%, and a cultural and business zone was created on the vacated territory.

The music stage of the festival is dedicated to freshmen - some of them have already become a favorite of the audience, others are just beginning their path to fame and an audience of millions. Among those who are definitely remembered by fans of domestic hip-hop are: Buckeye, Laud, i61 and Aigel. We decided to remind you about the latest releases of each of the named artists, so that you listen to your favorite tracks and definitely don’t miss them at the Urban Culture Festival.

Buckeye

This representative of the Minsk scene attracted attention back in 2016 by releasing a video "vi+ik", which received an unexpectedly large number of views. In March, Buckeye presented the album “Nagchampa”, on which you can find a feature with Husky (“Bubbles”). The album included dance tracks, but different in mood, and is called the artist’s most mature work to date. According to the artist, one of his main tasks is to lift people’s spirits, and, as Buckeye noted in a recent interview, he is not going to “dive into some kind of fake positivity.” “Life is different, sometimes you have to give it a whip,” he explains. Among the artist’s favorite works are “Hey May Girl”, “Broken” and “Tomorrow”. Come listen to the Buckeyes July 7 at 19:00.

Aigel

The original hip-hop duo of poetess Aigeli Gaisina and electronic musician Ilya Baramia has already managed to win the hearts of a wide variety of listeners. Unlike anyone else, mysterious, but at the same time close and understandable, Aigel was remembered for her piercing lines, hypnotic music and mesmerizing vocals. In April the group released new album“Music”, which became a continuation of their debut album “1190”. Despite the fact that the group's first release was very autobiographical, the second album proved that the Aigel duo can speak no less convincingly on topics not related to places of imprisonment and imperfection legislative framework. You can hear experimental hip-hop from Naberezhnye Chelny July 7 at 21:00.

i61

The most eccentric representative of Ufa hip-hop, founder of the Dopeclvb association, author of songs about killer maniacs and lettuce. Last year Fedor released the EP “I’m a Young Fool”, and this year he released two videos: "Leaves x salad" And "Woods"(he released the latter in preparation for the release of the continuation of the “Shelby” series). Complex and ambiguous, alien to templates and stereotypes, i61 was never afraid of the fame of a freak and did not strive to fill stadiums. Despite the collapse of YungRussia and the departure of Tomas Mraz from Dopeclvb, Fedor continues to create his rap for the elite, based more on associations and the subconscious than on logic. Catch i61 July 8 at 17:00.

Loud

Ufa house band, whose discography includes numerous features with hip-hop artists, starting with representatives of the Dopeclvb association (together with Tomas Mraz, before his joining Booking Machine) and ending with Antokha MC. Last year the trio released the album “DanceVoiceSound 2”, and this year they released a three-track EP “Dance Rhythm”. In the near future, Laud is preparing to present the third part of the “DanceVoiceSound” project, and one of the members of the team, Goddeem, will release a solo release. The first song from it was recorded with Basic Boy and is called “Strange Guys”. The performance of these bright heroes of domestic house will take place July 8 at 18:20.

Urban Extreme

The festival will be divided into thematic zones that will reflect all facets of street culture. Its visit is included in the mandatory program for all fans of the streetwear segment, fans of rap and beatbox battles, as well as connoisseurs street painting. One of the main zones – “Urban Extreme” – is dedicated to extreme street sports and will include skateboarding, BMX and a show program. According to the organizer of many skateboard and bmx events, Viktor “Kirpich” Demidov, festival guests can expect “spectacular tricks, adrenaline and speed.” He noted that such a spectacle cannot be missed, at least because star cast participants: Urban Fest will be attended by well-known athletes outside of St. Petersburg: Max Kruglov, Artem Kuranov, Artem Perepelitsa and other powerful riders.

Artem “Kuraga” Kuranov, one of the most fearless bmx riders in St. Petersburg, noted that he was interested in the new venue of the festival, where “a lot of underground guys gather.” He also said that the Moses Company, which builds skate parks, has done everything possible to ensure that the athletes can put on the most spectacular show.

The bmx sport is also worth following because the International Olympic Committee added it to the program of the 2020 Games in Tokyo. In addition, the next Olympics will include skateboarding and surfing competitions.

Avrora Urban Longboard Cup

Athletes who practice longboard freestyle always say that it is a more creative discipline than regular skateboarding. It includes many more tricks, many of which still have no name, just like unified system ratings. Anyone can play the role of judges and evaluate the complexity, creativity and speed of the presented elements by visiting the Avrora Urban Longboard Cup.

The Avrora longboard dancing and freestyle team will hold the largest longboarding competition ever held in Russia as part of the festival. For example, Nikita Dvortsov, the winner of the 2015 Pepper Cup (this is the first Russian Cup in longboard freestyle), will participate in them. According to him, the longboard zone is perfect for those who want to get acquainted with interesting people, because the festival will bring together “the coolest and most advanced youth of St. Petersburg.” A visit to this site is especially recommended for anyone who believes that longboarding is just going downhill on a board on smooth asphalt.

Urban Tiger Streetball Cup

Streetball, or street basketball, which appeared in poor neighborhoods of the United States in the middle of the 20th century, over the past decades has managed to acquire many fans around the world. What distinguishes it from ordinary basketball is that the competition is held under open air, game Zone occupies half of a standard basketball court, and the number of players is three by three. There is an opinion that one of the reasons for the success of streetball is that physical data is not so important in it - skill and technique decide a lot. In addition, streetball is usually played to music (hip-hop, of course), which adds atmosphere and entertainment to the game.

Street basketball at Urban Fest has a special zone. Sergei Shishkov, the founder of the Ballaholix organization, which popularizes streetball and freestyle basketball in Russia, is confident that visitors to the site will not be disappointed.

“This is not the first year that we will be participating in one of the coolest festivals in our country. If you love street sports and a real hip-hop atmosphere, then come! We have something to surprise you with! Basketball one love!

Sergey Shishkov

This year the festival has a new zone - Urban Rhyme, in which rap artists will compete with each other in a battle format. The best will be chosen by Kazhe Obima, who will also perform several new tracks from his upcoming album for Urban Fest guests. In addition, visitors to this area will enjoy scratching master classes, beatbox battles and a drum’n’bass party.

Among the DJs who will perform for festival guests on the night of July 7-8 are DJ Kashin, Nevidimka and SPTNK. DJ Kashin is a producer, performer and graphic designer from St. Petersburg, who is known to most for his collaboration with Nel “I broke up with the chick”. His performance at the Urban Culture Festival starts on July 7 at 23:00. At two o'clock in the morning, after a set from Nevidimka and Intelligency, the stage will move to SPTNK - a band from St. Petersburg, specializing in electronics with a serious bias in techno.

Street fashion fans can expect to meet the president International Buyers Association Georgy Rostovshchikov and other influential people in the field of streetwear. In addition, as part of the Urban Culture Festival there will be a presentation of the capsule collection "City of Sun", created by the BOBO in Paradise agency. The face of the line, which is based on the theme of labor, is the musician Antokha MC. “Russian brands have offered me collaborations before, but mostly on the topic of sports. And in the “City of the Sun” collection, which BOBO in Paradise creates, the guys managed to find moments that resonate specifically with my music - creation, work,” the artist commented on the release of the mini-collection. Among the items designed by designer Denis Kazantsev are denim, bomber, jersey, shorts, sweatshirt and overalls in five versions.

Urban Barber, which combines straight razors, perfect beards and creativity. Over the course of two days, masters from the best barbershops will update the look of everyone in an informal, friendly atmosphere.

The term Urban contemporary was first used by American DJ Frankie Crocket in the seventies in relation to the musical style on the radio. At that time, the most popular musical styles were rhythm and blues, soul, and reggae. Radio stations played exclusively this kind of music for listeners, and the words Urban contemporary meant “urban music” or “music for city residents.” In the nineties, hip-hop appeared, and a little later rap. Such music became the basis for broadcasting radio stations.

Music in this style was played for African Americans from 17 to 40 years old, but studies showed that the main listeners (more than 70%) were “white-skinned” Americans. Examples of urban music include compositions by such artists as Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé, Usher, Lil Jones, Busta Ramz, Sean Paul, Jay-Z, Ludacris.

Extreme sports, graffiti, street art among hip-hop and rap performers - that's what this movement includes. Contestants have the opportunity to express themselves, their own style in sports, dance or music and gain public recognition.

Now you know the meaning of the word "urban" in different meanings and you can safely apply your knowledge in practice.

The second half of the 20th century determined the beginning of the revolt of individuality both on a scale individual, and society as a whole. Liberalization of legislation, rapid development of technology, and growing self-awareness of society since the early 60s have literally given the people of the United States and Europe a free hand. Numerous movements for civil rights people, including movements against racial discrimination forced the leaders of states to legislatively recognize the rights and freedoms of citizens. The spirit of freedom and the struggle for it literally permeated all areas cultural life society of the 60-70s. Some manifestations of this struggle were sometimes illegal. The economic recession of the 70s, reforms and mass privatization made the already unstable situation of ordinary citizens feverish. The result is constant protests, an increase in crime, and the need for tough measures, which were not long in coming. Rapid political and economic changes, coupled with technical progress and general computerization have formed several generations that are so different from previous and subsequent ones that they can safely be called representatives of the revival of the 20th century.

The heyday of large cities, the urban lifestyle, and urban culture occurred precisely during this period of time. The emergence of many subcultures, radically different from each other: punks, rockers, hippies, and many others, can be explained solely by the desire for freedom of expression. Conventionally, all of them can be divided based on musical style representatives of each movement. The metropolis of the 60-80s was a bright and polyphonic anthill, filled with completely original representatives of various subcultures. Hardcore, metal, underground, pop, funk, hip-hop, modern R&B - a musical world full of experiments and new technologies. Invention of electronic musical instruments opened up new possibilities, ushering in the era of artificial sound. The surge in DJing and the rise in popularity electronic music laid the foundation for modern electronic musical culture. Music is only a small part of the huge iceberg of emerging urban culture. Numerous types of art of city streets - dancing, street sports, street fashion have become a symbol an entire era. For example, graffiti, previously considered vandalism, was recognized as a form of modern art several decades later. A spontaneous, bright, original, and even cosmic phenomenon in the gray everyday life of city streets and industrial areas. Oddly enough, there, like for example, in a former paper factory on the outskirts of Berlin, lives... art! Yes, real modern art. Only the shabby walls of an abandoned factory are used as a canvas, and instead of oil – an unbridled fantasy and a spray can in the hands. Almost all the premises of the paper mill have their own wonderful inhabitants: small and large (but very cute) monsters, extraterrestrial plants (or animals), and even Big Boss with a cigar in his teeth. An abandoned factory in Eberswalde is a real success for street artists. This is a kind of workshop and at the same time a gallery of street art representatives.

Changes in people's lifestyles have left their mark on the perception of all its spheres. The architecture of cities, previously subject to strict planning, began to change. The needs of citizens began to be taken into account when designing urban spaces. According to Jane Jacobs, one of the founders of new urbanism, a vibrant and diverse city, based on spontaneous order and various mechanisms of self-regulation, is in all respects much more livable than the implementation of any urban planning theory, no matter how thoughtful it may seem. Her book, The Death and Life of Great American Cities, was published in 1961 and almost immediately became a bestseller. Jane Jacobs's idea that big cities are natural generators of diversity and incubators of initiatives and all kinds of ideas, that is, to some extent, independent “living organisms,” created a real sensation.

But generation processes still need to be regulated, observing certain rules: short length of blocks, even mix of old and new buildings. The urban architecture of the 60-70s amazed the imagination with its brightness and originality: unusual shape buildings whose lines were borrowed from their living nature, curvilinear forms and memorable images. For example, the TWA airport terminal in New York, built in 1962 by architect Ero Sarrinen, resembles a stingray. From the 70s to the 90s, the era of postmodernism began: mirrored skyscrapers and buildings with an unusual combination of bizarre shapes.

Technological progress in all areas, including architecture, would be impossible without the general computerization of society. An extraordinary breakthrough in the field computer technology transformed the life of the then modern man, speeding up the pace and improving its quality. The modern realities of the frantic rhythm of the metropolis would not have been possible without the developments of computer geniuses of the 70-90s of the 20th century. Just think, the first personal computer was assembled by several teenagers in their father's garage! Phenomenon Apple Corporation- the personification of the spirit of freedom and self-realization is due solely to the personality of its creator, who became a man - a legend - Steve Jobs. A modern metropolis resident can hardly imagine his life without an iPhone, iPad, Mac or iPod. The Apple brand itself has become a real symbol of the era, and not just another fashionable gadget.

Another component of everyday city life, now as necessary as air, is the Internet. The surge in its distribution also occurred in the 90s. One of the search giants, Google, which was born in a student dormitory room, fully conveys one of eternal values of all times. "Don't be evel!" “Don’t be evil,” says Google’s unspoken slogan. The corporation is recognized as one of best employers in the world, and fully corresponds to this title. By the way, Google's offices reflect the most modern version of urban style with individual traits each country. The photo shows an office in Moscow.

The history of the urban style is relatively young, but extremely ambiguous, since it is a direct reflection of the individuality of the modern era, free and bright personalities living bright and rich life, while not forgetting about their roots and historical values.

What is "urban"? Probably everyone has heard the expression “level of urbanization of the population,” but not many understand its meaning. It seems, why call concepts with foreign words if you can replace them with Russian ones? But not always in our native language there is some analogue of a foreign concept, so you have to supplement your speech with various newfangled words. Today we will talk about what “urban” is and where this term is used.

Definition

Translated from Latin, urbane means “urban”. What does it mean? The word "urban" in the West is analogous to the word "city". In our country, this trend can be observed, but not often. When people talk about what “urban” is, they mean the prestige of the city. What could it be? Previously, prestige was measured in the number of factories and industries concentrated in one city. Today, an urbanized city should have not factories, but large shopping centers, clubs and restaurants. In general, everything that is simply necessary for the life of a modern person with good financial income.

Urbanization of the city

The most developed city in Russia is Moscow. St. Petersburg, Krasnodar and other million-plus cities are catching up with it. They are considered urban cities or urbanized cities. People of all ages can live comfortably in them. There is a large number of jobs, manufacturing, shopping and entertainment. People don't know what hunger and unemployment are. And when a person has a good life, he begins to engage in art. Various subcultures, parties and trade unions are created. People have the opportunity to openly express their opinions on this or that matter.

How does a city become urbanized? Why are there few such cities in our country, but in America almost every city has proud title urban? The fact is that an indicator of a city’s wealth is the wealth of its population. And if people have a well-paid job, then they will hold on to it and fulfill their mission well. Thus, production will develop, expand and hire new employees from other cities. Due to this, the city will grow.

Urban creativity

What is urban art? This is a product of youth activity that is born in big cities. Such art is rarely officially recognized, since it has no canons, and often there are no rules. What examples can you give? Graffiti is a type artistic creativity. Today it is officially recognized as a branch of art, but it is still unclear to many where artists can hone their skills. After all, for “decorating” city walls with inscriptions they can even give imprisonment. Urban dancing is hip-hop and breakdancing. By the way, they are also officially recognized dance styles, but competitions in them most often take place in a street format.

Urban music

People have always loved to sing. But every year the songs become less and less melodic. This is not to say that this is bad. Music is undergoing a rebirth. What is an urban song today? This is rap. Moreover, if 2-3 years ago performers tried to sing, today they simply read the text. Rappers often perform at battles. The purpose of this event is to humiliate the opponent through rhymes. Moreover, these should not only be well-rhymed lines, but first of all they should carry a semantic load. Such events arose within the framework of the urban style and, thanks to the Internet, the styles quickly became popular. Now rap battles are held not only by world-famous or national performers, but also by everyone.

Urban music can be given another definition. These are the songs that young people like, those songs that are in the top of all radio stations. In a word - pop. This kind of music becomes popular not due to any of its secret catchy properties, but because it plays obsessively from all minibuses, cafes and clubs.

Urban as a lifestyle

There are a lot of people living in big cities. And some of them are considered urbanized. Why not all, but only some part? Some people don't have financial opportunity enjoy all the benefits and conveniences that come with Big city. Others simply do not recognize the urban style as a manifestation of culture. And if the first people can still be understood, then the second ones cannot. After all, life does not stand still, it moves. Everything in it changes and develops. Therefore, culture changes over time and does not degrade, as many people think.

A young man who listens to rap admires graffiti, and free time spends performing various tricks on a snowboard, he can easily say about himself that his lifestyle is urban. He is a character of the era who knows neither war nor famine. It is difficult for young people to imagine how their ancestors lived.

And who sets the lifestyle? Today the Internet copes with this task. This is where young people learn what is fashionable to wear, what music they should listen to and where they should definitely get coffee. How do people know what exactly is considered an attribute of an urban lifestyle? From Instagram and thanks to photos of friends on other social networks.

Summer is the time to put on sneakers and shorts, throw a backpack on your shoulders and go to the music Festival, of which there are always a great many in the summer. Today we want to tell you about popular festivals street culture in Russia. We express our gratitude to Maria Georgievskaya for the material.

Skaters pirouette on the asphalt, vapers blow clouds of steam, and graffiti artists paint skulls in bandannas on the walls - the street lives, and the beat sways above it all. Rap music is the soundtrack to street style life.

Street style as everyday life.

The street lives by its own laws - in contrast to the silence and comfort of home, it is dynamic and sometimes inhospitable. As Tsoi said: “It’s raining outside. Lunch is waiting for them at home.” But street style adherents sacrifice silence for the sake of freedom of expression.

The street doesn't require a diploma and doesn't look at your professional experience. The law is simple: if you have something to say, say it. That's why there are no academies for skaters or universities for roofers. The street teaches and takes the exam. This is a stage, exhibition space and ring for freedom lovers.

Street style has seeped into fashion. We observed the “velvet revolution” in clothing, when top managers of large companies changed their business suits to jeans and sweatshirts, and television divas switched from heels to sneakers. Today, white Snickers are so popular that the first specialized dry cleaners are appearing (link). It is no longer possible to surprise anyone with sneakers worn under a dress, and the word “boyfriends” less and less often means “men.”

The street brings its message and the voice of this culture to the world - hip-hop. In their lyrics, rappers reflect life without censorship. Hip-hop has been criticized for this since its inception. Members of one of the first rap groups N.W.A reproached for candid stories about drugs and criminal lawlessness in the black neighborhoods of America. To this the soloists replied that they were simply showing what they themselves see every day. As a result, the participants were arrested right at the concerts, which still did not stop anyone - after being released, the rappers continued to perform their songs. Street culture is uncompromising. Even being banned, she attracted a lot of followers, and now, when there is more freedom, the number of street style adherents has increased.

Popular Russian festivals street culture

Clothing brands, retailers, designers, artists, D.I.Y. present their products. And creative associations. Also within the framework of the exhibition there are competitions in extreme sports, and on music venues Artists from all over the world perform.

Will present street culture in a very comprehensive way Urban Culture Festival . The event took place in Moscow on May 27-28 and will be held in St. Petersburg on June 3-4. The festival allocates areas not only for traditional street dancing, graffiti and extreme species sports, but also for such fresh areas as: vaping, barbering, workout and roofing. Also on main stage more than 20 will perform popular artists- undisguised life will sound on different voices: in the smoky noir of Scryptonite, the painful creases of Husky and the hysterical “where am I” of Nigative. For Scryptonite, the concert will actually be the premiere of his new album, “Holiday on 36 Street,” which was presented on May 24. Also within festival will take place rap battle - SLOVO will hold a tournament for ten participants.

At these events, rap music is the main musical accompaniment and even a full participant. At the same time, there is an event in Russia where hip-hop becomes the main character.
