February 19 is Marine Mammal Protection Day. Initially celebrated as Whale Day, which in recent years has more often been called Marine Mammal Protection Day. This day has been celebrated since 1986, when, after 200 years of merciless extermination, the International Whale Commission introduced a ban on whaling. It is still in effect today and means that the hunting of large whales, as well as the trade in whale meat, is prohibited throughout the world. Every year on this day, various conservation groups hold campaigns to protect whales and other marine mammals. Often environmentalists unite and devote this day to protecting one unique species that is in mortal danger.

March 1 Cat Day. On the first day of the first spring month, according to a spontaneously established tradition, Cat Day is celebrated in Russia. It is interesting that many nations, in turn, have established national days to honor these closest domestic inhabitants to humans. For example, in the USA cats are celebrated on October 29, in Poland on February 17, in Japan on February 22. And the basis for all national Cat Days was World Cat Day, celebrated on August 8th.

March 14th is Day of Action to Protect Rivers, Water and Life. “International Day of Action against Dams” is an international date that is celebrated in dozens of countries around the world every year. The first “Day of Action to Protect Rivers, Water and Life” was celebrated in 1998.

Among environmental significant dates, this day is especially important, since fresh water reserves on the planet are catastrophically depleted. In many countries, drinking water is already sold in cans. According to UNEP estimates, Russia has a third of the world's fresh water reserves and is second only to Canada. Water Day is a reminder to everyone about caring for water bodies, about the need to rationally and economically use our natural resources. In Russia, this day was first celebrated in 1995 under the motto “Water is life.”

April 1 International Bird Day. Based on the International Convention for the Conservation of Birds, which was signed in 1906, International Bird Day is celebrated every year on April 1. Also, the Russian Bird Conservation Union in 1996 took the initiative to hold “Spring Bird Day” in April. Actions to protect birds were taken by the Russian Committee for the Acclimatization of Animals back in the mid-19th century, and in 1910 the first demonstration bird stations were organized at the Moscow Zoo and the Petrovsky Agricultural Academy. Bird Day was first held in 1924 under the leadership of teacher Mazurov at the Ermolinsk school in the Smolensk region. It is believed that this Yunnat spring holiday was established in the USSR in 1926, and the following year it was organized in all districts of Moscow, where 1098 artificial nesting boxes were hung. In 1928, 65 thousand children participated in Bird Day across the country, who hung 15,182 birdhouses, and almost a quarter of a century later, more than 5 million schoolchildren in the RSFSR alone. Since then, such an event has become widespread, and it was celebrated on the first Sunday in April.

April 15 – June 5 All-Russian Days of Protection from Environmental Hazards. The rapid development of environmental education and enlightenment in the second half of the 20th and early 21st centuries. became the reaction of the world community and specialists to the deteriorating environmental situation in the world and the rapid depletion of natural resources. The environmental crisis has prompted humanity to seek solutions to environmental pollution problems. According to the outstanding scientist V.I. Vernadsky, the most important task of every inhabitant of the Earth is to learn to “manage oneself in relations with nature.” Environmental education and enlightenment have received international recognition as the most important means of solving environmental problems. These issues are reflected in a number of international scientific conferences, including the decisions of the UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro (1992), which Russia also joined.

April 22 World Earth Day. This day is intended to unite the people of the planet in days of environmental protection. The first “one-time” event on this day took place in 1970 in the USA. In May-June, thousands of people in dozens of Russian cities go out to the rivers: they clean their banks and beds, determine water pollution, plant trees, conduct information campaigns, symbolic and theatrical events, and processions. River campaigns have been held for more than one year, and the movement to protect rivers is gradually moving towards the implementation of long-term public river programs, in which people begin to take sections of rivers under their care.

This International Day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 1995 in a special resolution (No. A/RES/49/119) based on the recommendation of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which took place in 1994. The resolution set the date of the International Day as December 29, the day the Convention entered into force. But later the UN General Assembly moved the International Day of Biological Diversity to May 22, the day the Convention was signed (resolution No. A/RES/55/201).

Every year in Russia a number of dates are celebrated that are marked by special events in the life of our country and the people who live or once lived on its territory. Everyone knows how many cultural figures, great politicians, writers, scientists and other famous people were born in Russia. In addition, our country does not forget about those events that affected the course of history in the most dramatic way. And so that we all remember and honor all these dates and events, we should familiarize ourselves with the list of anniversaries, memorable and significant dates for 2018.

What dates are called anniversary, memorable and significant?

You cannot start talking about any significant date without understanding why it is called that way. Let's find out why dates are called memorable, anniversary or significant, and what this is connected with.

The concept " anniversary date", oddly enough, is quite intuitive and often in the generally accepted view differs from the application of such a formulation in practice. Most often, when talking about a specific person or event, we mention the anniversary date, counting the period from his birth or the day of the occurrence of this event. Also, sometimes anniversary dates are counted from the day of death or a special life event - the publication of a scientific work or the publication of a book. There is no rule about which date should be called an anniversary date, but most often a round date is celebrated, that is, ending in 0, or a half date, having a 5 at the end.

Definition memorable dates more specific. Memorable dates are those that particularly influenced the course of historical events or in some way affected the political, cultural or other sphere. In Russia there is a whole list of memorable dates, which was compiled by the Ministry of Culture and noted in legislation.
