Interest in chemistry did not fade away and in 1797 Charles Mackintosh opened the first work on the production of alum in Scotland. After gas lighting began to be introduced everywhere in Glasgow, Mackintosh decided to establish contacts with producers of coal, from which gas was obtained. He negotiated the purchase of waste and by-products from coal mining. From these Mackintosh was able to extract ammonia, which his father used in his production to make purple-red paint from lichen. However, he still had one untapped material - a mixture of liquid hydrocarbons called naphtha.
Back in 1791, Fabrioni noted the excellent properties of a solvent for rubber, but for some reason they were ignored. It was only in 1818 that Jay Sime suggested that “coal tar substance” could be used as a solvent for rubber - especially thanks to the active introduction of gas lighting, its production was easy and affordable. It is believed that in 1823, while conducting another experiment, Charles Mackintosh stained the sleeve of his jacket with a rubber solution. After some time, he noticed that the fabric had become waterproof and continued to study this property.
In truth, he was not the first to discover this rubber effect. Even South American aborigines covered their fabrics with a latex solution for hundreds of years. However, latex was unstable to ship to Europe, so the Mackintosh invention was truly a breakthrough for the industry of those years. He experimented with naphtha as a solvent and noticed that the fabric did become waterproof, but was sticky and had an unpleasant odor. Mackintosh was able to quickly solve the issue of stickiness - he suggested clamping the rubber between two sheets of fabric. He patented his technology in 1823 and soon founded Charles Macintosh & Co. However, several problems remained - the smell and loss of flexibility of the fabric at low temperatures.
The following year, Mackintosh approached the Birley brothers, renowned cotton spinners and weavers, with a business proposal. He convinced them to build their own factory nearby to produce rubberized cotton. But the odor problem could not be solved, so the public did not accept such clothes with enthusiasm. True, the practical advantages were highly appreciated by the army and navy, which ensured stable demand. However, despite this, even almost 10 years later, the factory did not generate the desired income.
Help came from the "father of the British rubber industry" Thomas Hancock. He invented a machine in 1820 that broke up rubber waste, fused and mixed it together and then formed it into rubber sheets or blocks. Such rubber dissolved faster and easier than raw rubber. Hancock knew about Mackintosh's work and in 1825 began a similar production in parallel with him. Hancock patented "waterproof dual textures" that had a higher rubber content, so they could spread more uniformly throughout the fabric and not have as much odor. Gradually the two inventors began to collaborate and in 1831 Hancock became a partner in the Mackintosh company. Two years later, the combined company bought Hancock's brother's specialty rubber medical devices business. Business took off completely after the discovery of rubber vulcanization.
Charles Mackintosh, however, is not only famous for his work with waterproof fabric. So, together with Charles Tennant, he invented bleaching powder for fabrics - bleach. Mackintosh also invented a process for reducing iron oxides with carbon monoxide. It was faster than the steel production process known at that time. Charles Mackintosh died in 1843 near his native Glasgow. After his death, his son George entered the business, but after a couple of years he left and his family was never again associated with the industry founded by his father. The notice of dissolution of partnership was handwritten on sheet A5, which stated: “We hereby give notice that the undersigned George Mackintosh and Henry Birley have resigned from the firm of Charles Macintosh & Co and that the undersigned Richard Birley, Thomas Hornby Birley, Herbert Birley, Thomas Hancock and William Brockedon."
