In this lesson, we will show you step by step how to draw a toucan in watercolor. Often, birds with bright colorful plumage are chosen as a plot for sketching, which can be depicted in various watercolor techniques. But the peculiarity of the toucan is not plumage at all, but a huge colorful beak. Despite such an amazing disproportion, drawing a toucan is not difficult. Of course, before work, you should consider several photos of an exotic handsome man from different angles. This will help to take into account the features in the construction of the sketch and in the color fill of the object.

To draw a bird, you will need standard materials:

  • thick (200 g/m2) watercolor paper;
  • tablet;
  • masking tape;
  • simple hard pencil;
  • eraser;
  • palette of watercolors;
  • mixing palette;
  • soft brush No. 8 (squirrel, kolinsky);
  • thin brushes for detailing (synthetics) No. 3 and 1;
  • a glass of water;
  • several paper napkins or paper towels.

Drawing stages

Step 1. As we said, the composition with the bird will be simple. In the foreground, let's draw a bird sitting on a branch, and in the background - the leaves of exotic plants. But in any case, we must start with a pencil sketch. First, let's correctly arrange the objects in the composition. We outline a branch along the diagonal of the sheet. Practically at the base of the branch we draw an oval body of a bird, supplement it with wings. Above we add a round head and a massive teardrop-shaped beak.

The initial image is ready, we continue to detail it: add round eyes, create a beak edging and a pattern on it, select the outline of the white breast and finish drawing thin paws. We clean up the sketch with an eraser and glue it to the tablet.

Step 2. Let's start with the colored part of the drawing - the beak. Fill the beak and the area around the eye with lemon cadmium.

Step 3. Pale indigo we prescribe a spot on the tip of the beak, legs and base of the wings. Fill the base tone of the toucan with liquid neutral black.

Step 4. We saturate the previously selected areas with a shade of indigo. We fill the upper part of the beak with cadmium yellow, and the lower part with a scarlet tint. The contour of the eye is shaded with a less concentrated shade of scarlet. We shade the white breast at the base under the beak. We try to work out the details easily, using large strokes of translucent paint.

Step 5. Create the color of the eye with ultramarine, fill the large pupil with black. We prescribe the branch under the bird with sepia, and the far end with almost transparent natural sienna.

Step 5. We enhance the contrast of the bird's color with a rich black. We shade the tip of the beak with a more liquid black. We also refine the beak and eye contour with dense shades.

Step 6. While the paint dries, work on the shaded (lower) side of the branch. We make the remote part of the branch more pale, creating the effect of remoteness. We leave the work until the watercolor is completely dry.

What purposes does it serve?
For what - you can see it is needed
Beak handsome - giant.
Only the toucan knows the bird.

Toucan is a unique and exotic bird. The main feature of these birds is their unusually large and bright beak, which is equal to about half of its body. Inside the beak is an equally long tongue that helps the birds to eat. Although this part of the body does not differ in large mass, it is still unusually difficult for toucans to fly. This is due to the fact that the beak violates the overall proportions of the bird's body, so it is extremely difficult for them to maintain balance. The beak of toucans only looks overly massive: in fact, it is quite light due to the fact that it has many air cavities that significantly reduce its weight. The toucan bird feeds mainly on plant foods. They peck out delicious fruits and berries that grow in their habitats. Their favorite fruit is the banana. However, these birds are able to eat not only plant foods, but also various insects, arthropods and not very large reptiles.

The toucan has a huge nose.
It's good for banana
Likes to eat banana toucan.
For food, a bearer is given.

Due to the fact that the toucan is poorly adapted for flying, these birds are very fond of “climbing” trees. Therefore, for normal life, they need forest expanses, where they can find not only an overnight stay, but also good food. The best habitat for toucans is the forests of South and North America, where these birds are very comfortable. They settle in hollows created on their own or "recaptured" from medium-sized mammals. Life in the forest is quite safe for a toucan. However, animals often become victims of poachers, who often not only catch birds for illegal sale, but also kill them, wanting to enjoy the beautiful and soft plumage. Hunting birds for their beaks is also widespread.
Toucans are very noisy birds whose calls are carried far through the rainforest. But at the same time, they are not at all grumpy, on the contrary, they are very friendly creatures with a peculiar sense of humor. Toucans maintain friendly relations with other members of their flock and, if necessary, will certainly come to the aid of their relatives.
In black feathers - wings, tail.
The beak is huge - with its growth.
Smart, brave, curious,
And he is an enviable handsome man.

His favorite fruit is banana.
Sometimes omnivorous! Who? - Toucan.

Master class progress

Let's draw a sketch. Draw the head in the form of a circle, the body in the form of an oval.

Let's draw all the bodies and heads of the toucan.

Take a flat brush number 8 and paint over the background with blue (white gouache + blue gouache) color. Paint the beak and near the eye with orange (yellow lemon + red scarlet).

Black paint over part of the head, torso, tail, tip of the beak. Paint over the eye with purple gouache. Let's make a white highlight in the toucan's eye. We shade the wings and tail with gray (white gouache + a little black) color.

With light brown (brown + yellow lemon) color, draw large and small branches of trees. Draw the legs of the bird in gray.

With a round brush No. 5, we “smear” the leaves on the branches with a bright green (emerald green + yellow lemon) color. Pure emerald paint more dark leaves. Let's draw a little scarlet red berries on the branches.
Our drawing is ready.

Pictures of birds can be very colorful, especially if you draw a parrot or a bird like a toucan. An amazingly shaped beak and unusual bright, contrasting colors distinguish this bird from others. It is enough just to draw a toucan with a huge bright yellow beak and black plumage, and it will immediately be clear what kind of bird it is. Despite this, we will learn to draw the correct forms of a bird in stages, first with a simple pencil, and then paint with paints or colored pencils.
You might think that the toucan is an unusual type of parrot. It turns out that no, the toucan belongs to the family of woodpeckers. By the way, his beak, despite its size, is quite light, because it has many pores inside.

1. How to start drawing a toucan bird

First of all, let's mark out a sheet of paper and with light lines of a simple pencil (you can use a ruler) draw a markup (grid) of six squares. The length of the side of the square will depend on the size of the toucan pattern. With the help of such a grid, it will be easier for you to draw the first, most important step. However, if you have a good eye, then you can do without markup. First draw the toucan's beak and a circle for the head. After that, draw a larger circle for the torso and connect it to the head. A grid of squares will help you outline the line of the tail and paws.

2. Contour mesh can be removed

The contour grid helps to correctly "hold" the proportions at the first stage. If you drew the first step fairly accurately, you can erase the straight marking lines with an eraser so that they do not interfere further draw a toucan bird. In this step, you only need to "enlarge" the torso and draw the full outline of the tail.

3. Toucan beak shape

In this step, you need to draw the shape of the toucan's beak, outline the neck and indicate the direction of the tail. Also, draw the contour lines for the position of the legs.

4. We finish drawing the general outlines of the bird

Draw the eye first. It consists of two circles, and the inner one is shifted upwards. Draw another straight line for the tail and start drawing the legs of the toucan.

5. Detailing the drawing. bird feathers

Carefully remove the extra contour lines from the drawing and start drawing the small details of the bird. Start at the beak and gradually move towards the bird's tail. There is nothing difficult in this step, you just need to be careful and attentive. The last thing you need to draw in this step is the legs of the bird and the branch on which the toucan sits.

6. Draw a toucan bird with a pencil

At this step, the drawing of the bird is already completely finished. You just have to choose how you will color it. I advise coloring with colored pencils, but if you have experience, you can use paints. I think shade toucan drawing a simple pencil is not worth it, since the black and white drawing greatly "loses" the color image of the toucan.

7. Drawing a toucan on a graphics tablet

You can use this drawing to color the toucan. Of course, it is impossible to achieve such a volume effect with colored pencils, but you can try with paints.

You can watch a video of drawing this bird. This is the first video of my channel, please do not judge strictly.

In this lesson, you will be able to draw a beautiful Ara parrot in stages.

This drawing was made on a graphics tablet. But it can be used for phased drawing with a simple pencil. The last step can be painted with paints and then you will get the same beautiful duck with bright plumage.

When drawing an eagle in flight, you must definitely draw a mountain landscape. The snow-capped mountain peaks and the clear blue sky will give the picture an additional colorful effect.

Each bird is beautiful and unique in its own way. If the main "decoration" of the toucan is a huge bright yellow beak, then the owl has huge round yellow eyes.

Even an ordinary sparrow turns out to be a very beautiful bird, if you take a closer look at it. Drawing a sparrow in stages with a pencil, you will see for yourself.

Crows are different, for example, gray crow, black crow, jackdaw and others. And by the way, a raven is not a crow, it is a completely different bird, with a large powerful beak and much larger than a crow.

A dove is a good character for drawing a wall newspaper dedicated to Teacher's Day, especially on May 1 and Victory Day - May 9. Everyone knows that the drawing of this bird is a symbol of peace and happiness, so very often pictures of doves are used for weddings.

Did you know that these colorful and unusual birds belong to the woodpecker family? And now you will also learn how to draw a toucan!

These bright exotic birds attract attention with their colorful huge beaks. Many of us think that a toucan is also a toucan in Africa. In fact, these birds are as many as 37 species, but all of them are united by the characteristic shape and size of the beak.

The main habitat of these birds is on the South American continent, from northern Argentina to Mexico. Despite the fact that the population of those places constantly hunts for toucans, these birds are very trusting. This applies especially to those cases when toucans are tamed and kept in captivity. If in ordinary life they eat the fruits of plants, then in captivity they can eat everything they are given, from meat to grass.

Would you like to learn how to draw a toucan?

Then arm yourself with pencils and, of course, a piece of paper. Ready? Then let's go!

1 - Draw a sketch of a toucan according to the following example. It already looks like it, right? But this is only the first step of nine.

2 - First of all, draw the outlines of the large beak of the bird.

3 - Then - the outlines of the eye and head.

4 - Now draw the outline of the front of the carcass.

5 - Close the contours from the back to the tail.

6 - Select the feathers of the tail and wings, and also draw a curved line from the top of the beak to 1/3 of the bird's body - this will be the division into dark and light plumage.

7 - In the seventh step, put the toucan on a branch by drawing this branch and its paws.

8 - Erase the sketch with an eraser.

9 - Color our toucan.

This is the most common image of this bird species. Although there are 37 varieties of them, almost all of us represent toucans in this way. I hope that everything worked out for you, and you figured out how to draw a toucan with colored pencils. In principle, you can use paints, or even make a graphic drawing - it's up to you!

Who is this Toucan? This is a very exotic bird. I won’t describe in words - we’ll start drawing right away.

Let's draw a Toucan - lesson 1

This is what the bird looks like.

We drew a sketch with a pencil, made sure that everything was correct and similar, and proceed to the main drawing. Start, according to the classics, with the largest. On the face of it, this seems to be the largest ... beak! But this is not entirely true, the body is still larger and it is generally more important for the image of a bird. We draw the body - it is oval and rather heavy:

The next stage is a strong neck, head and BEAK!

When I first saw pictures with a toucan, I thought that the name was given to it, probably, because it hammers with this beak with terrible force. But it turned out that they didn’t - the beak is light, porous in structure, and although toucans belong to woodpeckers, they do not knock on wood, but only gnaw at the fruits. And the name "toucan" is onomatopoeic - this is their characteristic cry.

Let's draw the legs - like woodpeckers and parrots - out of four fingers, two look forward and two look back.

The wings are not that small, but they seem so next to the nose. The tail also seems short. It is usually cut straight.

So the first drawing-coloring Toucan is ready.

Toucans have very bright colors. Usually - a black body with white or yellow spots, brightly colored legs and skin around the eyes. The beak is yellow or orange with a dark spot at the end.

Toucan is an amazing and beautiful bird, let's draw another one.

How to draw a Toucan step by step - lesson 2

The drawing steps are the same.
